A Parallel Corpus-Based Comparative Analysis of Korean and Tagalog Negation

본 연구의 목적은 한국어-외국어 병렬 말뭉치 구축 사업단의 1차 말뭉치 데이터를 기반으로 한국어와 필리핀 타갈로그어의 부정 표현을 대조하는 것이다. 먼저 두 언어의 부정 표현에 대한 선행 연구 분석을 바탕으로 부정 표현의 유형을 나누었다. 둘째, 두 언어에 존재하는 규준적 부정 표현(canonical negators)이 가지고 있는 특별한 문법적 속성을 비교하고 이러한 속성 중 하나로 귀속될 수 있는 제한, 조건 등에 대해 논의하였다. 마지막으로 병렬 말뭉치 데이터에서 추론할 수 있는 부정 표현의 대체 방법이나 비규준적 부정 표현(non-canonical negators)에 대해 예비 연구 결과를 공유하여 두 언어의 기존 부정 표현 유형을 확장 및 수정하고자 한다. 이를 통해 대규모 말뭉치 데이터를 기반으로 한 부정 표현 분석을 통해 심도 있는 설명이 가능하게 되며, 두 언어의 특정 문법을 비교하면서 언어 유형론적인 측면에서 광범위한 연구가 될 수 있다. 또한 한국어 또는 타갈로그어를 외국어로 가르치는 데 교육적 문법 자료에 객관적인 정보를 제공할 수 있다.

The goal of this research is to compare the negative expressions in Korean and Tagalog based on the corpus data of the Korean-Foreign Language Parallel Corpus Building Project Phase 1. First, the negative expressions are classified into different types based on previous research analyses on negative expressions in the two languages. Second, the special grammatical properties of the canonical negators in the two languages are compared and any restrictions, conditions and the like that could be attributed to any of these properties are discussed. Finally, preliminary research results on non-canonical negators or alternative methods of negative expressions that can be inferred from parallel corpus data are also shared with the intention of expanding and modifying the existing types of negative expressions in the two languages. Through this undertaking, a more in-depth explanation becomes possible through the analysis of negative expressions based on large-scale corpus data, and extensive research can also be conducted in terms of language typology while comparing the idiosyncratic grammatical properties of the two languages. Moreover, the study can also provide objective information on pedagogical grammar and materials used in teaching Korean or Tagalog as a second or a foreign language.
