본고는 한국 고전문학을 현재에 계승하는 여러 방법 중에서 인문서 출간을 통한 대중화 방법을 살펴보았다. 인문서 출간은 일회성 투고와는 달리 단행본으로 출간하는 것이기에 고전문학의 가치와는 별개로 상업적 출판으로서의 제약이 따른다. 그런 제약은 편집에 따른 것에서부터 내용적 구성과 컨셉을 설정하고 서술하는 것에 이르기까지 여러 측면에서 이루어진다. 이런 어려움에도 불구하고 고전문학 인문서 출간은 우리 고전의 가치와 의미를 대중적으로 확산하는 유효한 방식이기에 지속적으로 시도되어야 한다. 인문서를 통해 대중화하는 여러 방법들이 모두 그러하겠지만, 특히 인문서를 통한 고전문학 계승에서 유념해야 할 것은 결국 고전문학이 존재하던 모습 그대로 전달하려는 집필자의 의지와 지향성이다. 물론 고전문학을 설명하고 이해하는데 어려움이 있기에, 상황에 따라 부분적인 개요, 단편적 교훈에 머물게 되거나, 전문적이고 지적인 부분에만 집중할 수도 있다. 이런 방법 모두 나름의 가치가 있으나, 고전을 고전답게 계승하는 방법으로서는 고전이 문학으로서 자리하던 그 모습 그대로를 설명하고 풀이하는 것이 더 적절하다. 이렇게 고전이 문학 작품이었다는 총체성을 놓지 않는 상황에서 해당 내용 전체를 보여주려 노력하며, 가치의 강요나 설득이 아닌 설명과 풀이를 통한 제시에 주안점을 두는 것이 고전 계승에 중요한 방법으로, 고전문학이 문학의 본령대로 존재하게 하는 길이다. 고전의 현재적 계승은 여러 어려움에도 불구하고 다각도로 지속적으로 이루어져야 하는데, 이는 우리 고전을 현재에 효과적으로 전달·발전시킴으로써 고전의 가치를 이해하게 하고, 오늘의 삶을 되새기게 하며, 미래 우리의 삶을 풍요롭게 할 것이기 때문이다.
The reason for inheriting classics today is because classics are valuable. There has been a great endeavor to inherit classics today, and it will be continued in many different methods. This article specifically examined the methods of spreading classics through publishing of essay books. Through this, it was confirmed that the value of classics is the nature of literature itself. So, we should be able to write an classic novel itself. Nevertheless publication has its own commercial viability. Therefore, it was clarified that the inheritance of classics should aim for inclusive extension by embracing ourselves and everything around that classics had. We must be focused that classic’s totality more than unessential things such as what is real, what is more valuable and what should we do, or what we would do. Naturally what is important that explanation of classic is needed, learn a lesson through the text are good, intellectual play is inevitable inevitable and so on. But how and what classic novels had been is more important than. Thus, the inheritance of classics should be accomplished with the effort to find genuineness of ourselves and the true value of classics in addition to the studies of our classics’ authenticity and endeavor to inherit them. Finally we should listen to what classics said. Since this is the proper function of literature and the meaning of its existence.
