『고승전』의 예언과 징조

The Precognition and Omen in Gaoseng Zhuan

『고승전』은 중국불교에서 예언과 징조의 중요성, 이와 관련된 승려의 능력이 어떻게 통합되었는지에 대하여 분석할 수 있는 중요한 자료이다. 본고에서는『고승전』에 기록되어 있는 다양한 예언의 방법을 찾아보고, 승전에 어떻게 들어가게 되었는지 고찰하고자 하였다. 전통사회의 문화 범주에 있어서 예언적인 기법은 매우 중요하게 생각되어 왔다. 그러므로 중국불교에서 승전의 편찬자는 인도나 중앙아시아의 언어를 바탕으로 번역되거나 편찬된 불교 문헌과 같은 표준적인 불교경론과 중국의 고유한 점복 방법 양쪽에 정통할 필요가 있었다. 『고승전』의 편찬자인 혜교도 이러한 전통을 『고승전』에서 통합적으로 이용하였을 것이다. 『고승전』에 나타난 다양한 예언의 주제 중에서 가장 중요한 것은 승려의 생애와 관련된 것이다. 특히 승려의 죽음 이전이나 죽음과 동시에 일어나는 기묘한 현상에서는 수행의 결과로 나타난 고승의 정신적인 성취가 자연을 포함한 환경이 감응을 보일 정도로 중요하다는 것을 나타낸다. 이러한 생각은 전통적으로 중국적인 것이지만, 동시에 인도불교와의 상호작용도 반영하였다고 생각된다. 결과적으로 『고승전』에 특징적인 예언의 주제와 종류는 인도적이고 중국적인 요소의 흥미로운 결합을 나타낸다고 할 수 있다. 출생, 정신적인 성취 그리고 죽음과 관련된 일련의 사건들의 강조는 확실히 석가모니불의 이야기로부터 영향을 받았다. 그러나 본고에서 살펴본 바와 같이 삶과 죽음의 순간의 초자연적인 일들은 불교 이외의 출처에서도 때때로 찾아볼 수 있다. 좀 더 넓은 의미에서 이러한 분석을 통하여『고승전』에서 점술뿐만 아니라 단순한 초자연적인 힘을 넘어 예언의 심오한 의미를 강조하였다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 이를 통하여 『고승전』이 편찬될 무렵에는 이러한 속성이 고승의 본질적인 특성의 하나로 인정된 것을 알 수 있다.

In this paper, I endeavor to explore various methods of prophecy and precognition as recorded in Gaoseng Zhuan and to analyze their integration into this text. Prophetic techniques have held significant importance within the cultural framework of traditional society. Consequently, in Chinese Buddhism, the compiler of Buddhist hagiography needed to be proficient in both standard Buddhist scriptures, including texts translated or compiled based on Indian or Central Asian languages, and China's distinctive method of divination. The most prominent theme of prophecy within Gaoseng Zhuan pertains to the life of a monk. Specifically, it delves into the extraordinary occurrences preceding or coinciding with a monk's passing, illustrating the spiritual attainment of a high-ranking monastic as a resultant of their practice. This underscores the notion that the environment, encompassing nature, plays a pivotal role, thereby showcasing the concept of resonantal stimulus and response (感應). While rooted in traditional Chinese thought, it is also believed to reflect an engagement with Indian Buddhism. Consequently, it can be posited that the themes and prophecies delineated in Gaoseng Zhuan constitute a compelling amalgamation of Indian and Chinese Buddhist elements. In a broader sense, this analysis underscores the profound significance of prophecy, transcending mere supernatural power, within Gaoseng Zhuan. By the time Gaoseng Zhuan was compiled, these attributes were acknowledged as essential facets of monks possessing elevated virtues.
