Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between loneliness, neurosis, meaning of life and suicidal thoughts in college students. Methods: A self-report questionnaire was used for 351 college students using loneliness, neuroticism, meaning of life, and suicidal thoughts scales, and 351 copies of data were used for analysis. The collected data were ana- lyzed using SPSS 23.0 and SPSS Macro programs. Results: The results of this study are as follows. First, the mediating effect of the meaning of life in the relationship between lone- liness and suicidal thoughts was verified. Second, neuroticism controls the relationship between loneliness and the meaning of life. Third, the specific value of neuroticism showed that the group with high levels of neuroticism had a lower meaning of life, and the group with low levels of neuroticism perceived a greater change in meaning of life according to the level of loneliness than the group with high levels. Conclusions: This study seek a more integrated understanding of loneliness in college students by verifying the comprehensive pathways in which loneliness affects suicidal ideation, and confirm the influ- ence of neuroticism as a factor that lowers the meaning of life.
