본 연구의 목적은 프로이트와 라캉의 정신분석적 시각으로 <라이프 오브 파이>를 해석하기 위함이다. 파이가 말한 두 가지 이야기는 정신분석적 관점에서볼 때는 모두 사실과는 거리가 먼, 파이가 만들어 낸 이야기이다. 그 이유는 기억의 사후작용 때문이다. 바다에 떠 있는 구명보트는 그리스문자 θ (세타) 모양으로, 이것은 어린 파이가 학교에서 자신의 이름이 파이라는 것을 설명할 때 칠판에 그린 그림과 똑같다. 영화에서 파이는 바다에 떠다니는 구명보트로 형상화되는데, 이 파이가 바로 상징계를 의미한다. 실재계는 죽음의 위험으로 다가오는 구명보트를 둘러싼 바다 전체를 가리킨다. 식충섬은 실재 중의 실재로 실재계의 배꼽과 같은 것으로, 라캉이 말하는 큰사물에 해당한다. 상상계는 구명보트에서 일어나는 모든 아귀다툼이다. 구명보트에서 일어나는 삶과 죽음, 사랑과 미움, 평화와 공격, 이 모든 일은 상상계에 속한다. 영화에서 파이는 두 단계를 통해 자신의트라우마를 극복한다. 첫 번째는 삶을 보내는 것이고 두 번째는 삶을 받아들이는것이다. 삶을 보내는 것은 상실된 사랑의 대상에 대한 애도의 영역이며, 삶을 받아들이는 것은 신의 존재를 인정하고 신과 화해하며 신에게 감사하는 승화의 영역이다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the film <Life of Pi> in the terms of Freudian and Lacanian’s psychoanalysis. The two stories that Pi told are fictional, which are both far from truth from a psychoanalytic point of view. It’s because of deferred action which works in memory. The lifeboat floating in the sea is in the shape of Greek letter θ, which is exactly the same as the picture on the blackboard that young Pi drew, saying his name is Pi at school. In the film, Pi is embodied as a lifeboat floating in the sea, which means the Symbolic. The Real refers to the entire sea surrounding a lifeboat approaching with danger of death. The insectivorous island is the Real itself, that is, a belly button in the Real, and corresponds to what Lacan calls la Chose. The Imaginary is everything that happens on a lifeboat. In other words, life and death, love and hate, peace and attack on a lifeboat, all of which correspond to the Imaginary. In the film, Pi overcomes his trauma through two stages. The first is to let life go and the second is to accept life. Letting life go is an area of mourning for the object of lost love, and accepting life is an area of sublimation that acknowledges the existence of God, reconciles with God, and thanks God.
