The Life of Cheol-Ho Yoon, The Trailblazer of Korean Sitting Volleyball

우리나라 좌식배구 선구자, 윤철호 선수의 좌식배구史적 업적을 통해 그가 좌식배구 발전에 끼친 영향과 좌식배구를 위해 살아온 그의 발자취를 살펴보는 것이 이 연구의 목적이었으며, 이를계기로 우리나라 좌식배구 역사를 정립하는데 초석을 마련하고자 하였다. 첫째, 서울 패럴림픽에 탁구 종목 출전을 목표하였으나, 최종 선발전에서 탈락하여 서울 패럴림픽 조직위원회의 유도로 좌식배구에 입문하였으며, 타고난 운동신경 탓에 선발전을 통해 좌식배구 국가대표 선수로 선발되어 좌식배구 선수생활을 시작하였다. 선수생활을 통해 인간의 무한한 가능성과 양보와 이해, 용서와 배려의 참된 의미를 깨달았으며, 육체고통 극복 방법과 자신과의 싸움에서 승리할 수 있는 방법을 배웠고, 모든 것이 양보, 이해, 용서로만 가능하다는 것을 알게 되었다. 둘째, 선수로서의 그는 각종 국내ㆍ외 대회에서의 탁월한 기량으로 독보적인 존재가 되었으며 국위선양에도 크게 기여하였고, 우리나라 좌식배구 역사에 획을 그을 만큼의 중요한 인물이 되었다. 셋째, 좌식배구 행정가로 변신한 그는 전국장애인좌식배구연맹과 한국장애인배구선수협의회를 결성하여 선수 권익 보호에 앞장섰으며, 장애인 체육 행정의 선진화의 중요성을 인지하여 세계장애인배구연맹과의 교류를 통해 세계대회 유치, 국제지도자 자격과정, 국제등급분류자 양성과정 유치에 주도적 역할을 하였다.

The goal of this research is to trace the footsteps Cheol-Ho Yoon has left in the history of Korean Sitting Volleyball to examine his influences on the development of Korean Sitting Volleyball. By doing so, it aims to provide a historical background to understand Korean Sitting Volleyball. First, Yoon was initially eager to participate in the 1988 Summer Paralympics in Seoul as a table tennis player but, after he lost in the final selection match, the organization committee of Paralympics recommend him participating instead in the selection for the sitting volleyball national team. With his gifted athletic ability, he could be selected as a member of the national team and that was the beginning of his career in sitting volleyball. Continuing his career as a sitting volleyball player, Yoon could learn the limitless potential of a human being, the meaning of understanding and altruism, and the way to overcome his handicap and win in the competition with himself. Second, As a sitting volleyball player, he was one of the best players in South Korea, demonstrating his excellence in many national and international competitions, and elevating the nation’s reputation. He has left huge footprints in the Korean sitting volleyball history. Third, after retiring as a player, Yoon became a sports administrator for sitting volleyball and worked for protecting the rights of disabled athletes by organizing the National Federation of Sitting Volleyball and the Council for Korean Sitting Volleyball Players.
