A Study on the Purpose and Perception of Code Switching in Late Bilingual Speakers

  • 14

The purpose of this study is to investigate the purpose and perception of code switching by foreign students. In Chapter 1, this paper analyzed the concepts of code switching and late bilingual speakers and raised research questions. In Chapter 2, first, this paper checked the literature on late bilingual speakers. This paper examined the reasons for becoming late bilingual speakers by dividing them into social and personal reasons. Next, this paper looked at several studies that discussed the motivation and purpose of code switching. This paper synthesized the contents and classified them into 12 purposes. In Chapter 3, this paper introduced the research method. This paper conducted FGI, a qualitative study, on seven international students. In Chapter 4, this paper derived the results of the study. The data in Chapter 3 are attributed to several categories. First, the purpose of code switching was classified into ‘when they don’t remember the vocabulary’, ‘when they want to emphasize the content’, ‘when they want to explain in detail’, ‘when they don’t want others to hear’, ‘when they want to form a bond’, and ‘when they want to reveal that they’re good at English’. The questions about the following perception were largely divided into ‘my use’ and ‘the use of others’. Regarding their use of code switching, participants expressed positive views such as ‘usefulness’, ‘need’, and ‘efficiency’. However, regarding other people’s code switching, participants expressed negative views such as “Their Korean is poor.” and “If they mix English, they appear to be pretentious.” There was also an answer that said, “I have no thoughts.”
