This study aims to examine and discuss prospective directions that should be taken by educational programs on Korean language communication, which have become indeterminate because of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the pandemic. The ways in which people communicate have transformed rapidly because of the development of advanced computing devices, non-face-to-face learning situations, ambiguities between virtual reality and the real world, and the ongoing pandemic. In-person communication using spoken language has declined, while the use of ‘fingers’ to communicate in virtual spaces has become mainstream. The growing trend of avoiding interpersonal relationships is noted even in Korean language classrooms. Given these new learning conditions, education related to Korean language communication should adopt a Multimodal format while enhancing face-to-face communication skills beyond basic proficiency. To this end, the present study suggests measures such as constructing collaborative systems using both computer technology and human resources, exploring integrated and creative communication tasks, teaching and normalizing the importance of human-centered face-to-face communication, establishing rapport-building programs, and instructing experts in face-to-face communication.
