This study aims to examines foreign undergraduate students’ perception of using visual materials in academic writing and discusses the implications for effective education of using visual materials. As a result of a survey of 100 foreign undergraduate students, we found that most respondents use various visual materials in academic writing without difficulty. However, 60% of the respondents had no educational experience using visual materials in academic writing and 74% of the respondents said that education on the use of visual materials was necessary. In particular, respondents said that they needed education on the use of visual materials included selecting the contents of visual materials for academic writing, reasoning based on visual materials, and selecting the type of visual materials appropriate for academic writing. Based on these results, we suggested that education on the use of visual materials should be provided to foreign undergraduates regardless of their major and that the function, effectiveness, and stage of use of visual materials should be included as the educational content. In addition, we mentioned that it is necessary to organize the educational content by level when conducting education using visual materials in academic writing.
