한국어 고급 학습자의 통역 불안에 대한 현상학적 연구

A Phenomenological Study on the Anxiety of Advanced Korean Learners in Interpretation settings

Previous research on Korean language anxiety focused on the links between the level of language anxiety and Korean skill performance. Although translation and interpretation have been regarded as the fifth skill of foreign language learning, language anxiety in interpretation settings has not received attention before. This study investigated the influence of anxiety in the interpretation settings and the main components leading to those anxieties. Through a qualitative research method, phenomenological interviews were undertaken by initiating conversations with four advanced Korean learners. According to Colaizzi(1978)’s phenomenological research method procedure, including the two main research problems in this study, sentence units with similar meanings were grouped, and a total of eleven sub-components were identified. Finally, the eleven sub-components were derived into six core categories as high-level topics(affective anxiety, cognitive anxiety, physiological anxiety, Korean speech anxiety, communication anxiety and interpretation work-related anxiety). The results indicate that interpretation anxiety is a widespread phenomenon for advanced Korean learners, and it comes in different stages, from the preparing stage to the performing stage of interpretation. Although the participants prepared more in advance to relieve their anxiety, the anxiety during the interpretation reduced their cognitive processing skills, resulting in poor interpretation performance. Furthermore, it leads to negative self-evaluation of their Korean interpretation skills. Second, interpretation anxiety has different characteristics that distinguish it from other language skills of foreign languages, which agrees with Chiang(2006). Interpretation anxiety turned into a more complicated phenomenon since Korean learners may face various situations in interpretation that cause them different levels of anxiety. Further studies on anxiety in different interpretation situations will be needed.
