Based on Hyland’s reporting verb classification model, Han Dongwon’s viewpoint aspect, and Lee Hyosang’s internal and external view of tense, this study examined tense and aspect usages and their discourse functions in reporting verbs. The study analyzed 30 academic papers from 5 KCI journals of Korean language education. The study revealed that there is no restriction on the tense and aspect uses of discourse verbs. In non-discourse verbs, ‘-었-’ and ‘-고 있다’ were mainly used due to restrictions. Reporting verbs taking ‘-느-’ are mainly discourse verbs. However, the study found that in the composition of ‘researcher (year)’, non-discourse verbs that activate ‘researcher’s writings or works’ can also take ‘-느-’. The study also explained the discourse functions of tense and aspect choices. ‘-느-’ mainly reduces the psychological distance between the citation’s perspective and the author’s perspective. It also presents positive attitudes and essential information. ‘-었-’ was found to maintain a psychological distance. It presents a neutral and reserved attitude and gives secondary information. The function of ‘-고 있다’ and ‘-어 있다’ presents an indirect attitude and provides auxiliary and specific information. Furthermore, ‘-고 있다’ highlights the presentity in previous research. The findings of this study are meaningful in providing educational implications for reporting verbs and content for academic writing education.
