This study aims to examine the effects of adjacent preceding consonants on the pronunciation of back vowels by analyzing the acoustic phonetic characteristics of /ㅡ, ㅜ, ㅓ, ㅗ/ pronounced by Chinese learners of Korean. This paper regards the preceding adjacent consonant as a factor influencing the pronunciation of the back vowels, and compares the pronunciation of Chinese learners of Koreans and native Koreans. Key findings from the analysis are summarized as below. The F2 value of back vowels increases when preceding consonants are articulated in the alveolar or the palate. The fricative with strong strident has a strong noise energy which contributes to the rise of the back vowel F2 value. The F1 and F2 value of adjacent back vowels increases in case nasal sounds, F2 value increases in case lateral sounds, sonorant with low frequency energy, preceded the back vowels. A stop sound /ㄱ/ with a [grave] feature does not increase the F2 value of the back vowel because the strident interval disappears due to voicing of a stop sound in word-initial and non-word initial positions.
