The purpose of this study is to acoustically analyze 8 Korean monophthongs produced by the 20 Vietnamese novice learners of Korean and the 20 native speakers of Korean and to compare their pronunciations. The participants were all female speakers. Among many acoustic features of vowels, we here present the first formants(F1) and the second formants(F2), by which we can assume the place of articulation of the vowels produced. The result shows that almost all vowels produced by the Vietnamese learners are significantly different in their F1 and F2 to those produced by the native speakers of Korean. Particularly in case of the back vowels, /ㅜ/ and /ㅗ/, the differences between the Vietnamese learners and the native speakers of Korean can lead to confusion, which means it has to be the first priority when teaching vowel pronunciation of Korean to teach how to pronounce those two vowels in a precise way.
