한국어 모국어 화자와 비모국어 화자간의 의성어, 의태어 연상 내용 비교 연구

A Comparative study on Word Association between NS and NNS : based on the Korean Onomatopoeic and Mimetic Words

Development of phonetic and symbolic words is one of the characteristics of the Korean vocabulary. Even if removed, these words do not change the meaning of the sentence itself. However, onomatopoeic and mimetic words allow a better grasp of the atmosphere of an utterance situation, a speaker’s attitude, etc. With the sense of presence and depiction, the situation becomes more imaginable. Such onomatopoeic and Mimetic words are collocational because of co-occurrence restrictions. This is why people can think of the same or similar words when hearing such words. The purpose of this study is to compare how native and non-native Korean speakers associate onomatopoeic and mimetic words. In a study with advanced Korean language learners who are studying for master’s degrees related to Korean language, have shown that they recorded lower levels of word association. They also failed to accurately guess onomatopoeic and mimetic words in the titles of newspaper article and the contents. In spite of the difficulties, in a survey they answered they had few opportunities to understand Korean onomatopoeic and mimetic words.
