Aspects of Antonymous Relation of Korean Sign Language: Using beginning level antonym pairs as the subject

This study aims to find the antonymous relations in Korean sign language. In order to achieve this goal, we analyzed the educational antonymous pairs in the beginning level of Korean according to chereme of Korean sign language by its distinctive nature. Research shows the antonymous relation of Korean sign language as the following: First, aspects of antonymous relation according to hand shape consist of HX-HY type, which shows only hand shape as contrasting component [man:woman] and of HmX-HmY type, which shows the different aspects in hand shape and movement. Secondly, aspects of antonymous relation according to movement has two forms, MX-MY and MhX-MhY, subdiving into right/left, high/low, before/after, and far/near. Thirdly, aspects of antonymous relation according to location in vocabulary came to show as LX-LY. Fourthly, aspects of orientation and non-manual signal in anonymous relation did not appear in the beginning level of Korean. Lastly, antonymous relation pairs such as words [hometown:foreign land] is not a distinctive pair of chereme but is compound pair in nature. The results of the study can help the learners of Korean sign language to use the vocabulary to develop the skills of distinguishing sign language distinction.
