The aim of this study is to analyze the narrative identity of female marriage immigrants as revealed in an oral interview that proceeded in Korean. Narrative identity constructed through a narrative that bespeaks the specific individual’s experience and life as a whole is an object that ensures effective observation of language and identity in combination. Especially notable is the narrative identity of female marriage immigrants, in that it allows through an analysis of linguistic data an approach to the social aspect of second language acquisition. For their narrative identity emerges as the narrative second language repertory that is acquired along with the sociocultural competence that develop through their experience of the Korean society and their participation in the interaction proceeding in Korean. From this perspective, this study have reviewed narrative interviews with four female marriage immigrants who live in Seoul and who speak Vietnamese as their first language. The narrative building on their ‘marriage stories’ were organized between Korean interviewers and the interviewees as female marriage immigrants, and their narrative identity also carried conversational and reciprocal character. As such reciprocity is geared to the perspective of Other, namely a Korean interviewer, however, it cannot quite be considered a story independently defining one’s selfhood. Some of the reviewed interviews, denying the Korean interviewer’s engagement in the story, presented the construction of a narrative with the social identity as ‘a marriage immigrant just like any Korean’.
