한국어 교육용 시사 한자에 관한 기초 연구

A Preliminary Study on Sino-Korean Words for Current Events in Korean Education

The aim of this study is to present the immediate need for teaching Sino-Korean in Korean classes and then to suggest a teaching plan, along with a Sino-Korean words list for the plan. Research of Sino-Korean for teaching Korean has been continuously and briskly conducted since the 1970s. However, most of the aims of such studies simply focus on Sino-Korean vocabulary build up, disregarding direct Sino-Korean learning. In fact, when it comes to the fact that certain Sino-Korean words are still frequently used today, it would be a meaningful research to compile and teach everyday Sino-Korean words. Especially, Sino-Korean is important in news articles. Although there is the Korean notation rule for the Chinese character, some frequently used words, particularly in headlines, are still written in the Chinese character; if readers do not know the Chinese character, they would have limitation in understanding the news articles. Also, such Chinese characters are, in some cases, abbreviations which might not be understandable unless the readers have some knowledge about Korean current events. This study, thus, selects a list of Sino-Korean words that can be found in news articles through an objective analysis and presents the meanings of the words and frequent lexical areas in the list to help learners understand news articles about Korean current events.
