This paper examines characteristics of studies of learner’s dictionary in the Soviet Union and independent Russia. The term uchebnyj slovar’ was first used in bilingual dictionary. It is widely accepted that uchebnyj slovar’s are designed for beginners, not for advanced learners. As a result, learner’s dictionary and uchebnyj slovar’ differ in size, expected user, goals and so on. The author also tries to define the origin of the terms active dictionary and passive dictionary from the works of Lev Shcherba and the trend in studying of uchebnyj slovar’ after Shcherba.
