In this paper, the communicative functions of sentence ending and the co-occurrence of connective endings in academic writing are presented. The linguistic forms of 6 communicative functions such as ‘expressing possibility’, ‘declaring’, ‘guessing’, ‘expressing situation’, ‘suggesting’, ‘expressing tendency’ used in academic writing are provided. And the meaning and correlation of the first connective ending and the second connective ending are indicated according to the communicative functions. 18 kinds of the communicative functions of sentence ending and the co-occurrence of connective endings are suggested. It comes out that some co-occurrence of connective endings are used regardless of the communicative functions of sentence ending, the others are not. To enhance the ability to write the complex sentences of Korean learners for academic purpose, the general co-occurrence of sentence endings should be presented. And then, the exceptional co-occurrence of sentence endings and the correlation of communicative functions should be known to learners in order to let them understand the peculiarity of the complex sentences. Above all, it is most important that teachers let learners understand of communicative functions of sentence ending and the co-occurrence of connective endings according to the communicative functions.
