A Study on Trends of Korean Culture Education Research and Korean Literature Education Research in KSL Teaching

This study aims to an overview of changes found in research done on the Korean culture education and Korean literature education over the past 30 years since 1980s. Korean literature education research has concerned on teaching culture using literary works in 1990s and Korean culture has been the main topic in literature education until now. However literature education has been discussed a part of culture education since 2005. By 2005 there has been mostly general discussion over all aspects the culture education. Consequently it has been concerned on culture education contents out of the context of language education. Entering the later half of the 2010, with the growth of KSL a research focus is placed on culture education within the context of language education. As the result, studies on teaching Korean culture using mass-media and movies, dramas, songs, idioms, non-verbal behaviors, diverse literary genres, etc are appeared. These studies are necessarily associate with language education and concerned on learners’ acquisition of socio-cultural competence. Futhermore these studies are concerned on inter-cultural communication and multi-cultural understanding that will be the main purposes of cultural education in KSL teaching.
