This study aims to investigate the needs of developing Korean culture education topics for overseas Korean language teachers and learners in the CIS area. There have been numerous discussions within Korean language education regarding effective ways to deliver Korean culture education. Rather than dealing with it in a one-sided way as it was done in the past, recent discussions have yielded a viewpoint that Korean culture education may be more effective if approached from the comparative culture perspective. Against this backdrop, first, some of the cultural topics from the Korean textbooks were extracted and then their preferences were determined. After that, a needs analysis was done to find cultural elements that weren’t included in the textbook and materials to be used in the CIS area. Findings from the study will be used as basic research references for developing culture education materials specific to this area.
