다문화 영어 그림책을 활용한 어휘 관련 다문화 문식성(Multicultural English Literacies)교육: SIOP 모델 기반

A Study on Multicultural English Literacy Education related to Vocabulary through Multicultural English Picture Books: Based on SIOP Model

The purpose of this study is to propose an instruction model of developing multicultural English literacies through multicultural English picture books. Given the circumstances that students from multicultural families also need to enhance multicultural awareness and achieve academic goal in English, the society as well as the field of education should offer multicultural experiences with appropriate educational goals and activities. This article examines how to develop such a proper educational model for EFL students in Korean schools where multicultural setting is prevalent and increasing continuously. To propose a teaching model frame, this paper reviews the studies and literatures related to SIOP Model, multicultural English picture books and multicultural English literacies. Analyzing three different multicultural English picture books in terms of language use and multicultural contents, this article attempts to suggest a language and content integrated model. The results of this study indicate that multicultural English picture books help to improve students’ multicultural awareness as well as literacies, and which imply for a high co-relationship between multicultural awareness and multicultural English literacies. This article concludes with a need for enhancing multicultural awareness and developing multicultural literacies with language-content integrated goals.
