A Study on the Korean Acquisition of the Past Expression of Multicultural family’s Children: Focused on the children from 4~8 years of age

This thesis is to inquire into the acquisition aspect of the tense focused on the past expression of multicultural family’s children. The acquisition aspect is examined out in three ways, such as the prevalence of ‘eoss(었)-’, the verb form combined with ‘-eoss-’, and time adverbs. It is found out that the acquisition of ‘-eoss-’ has a correlation with the three ways. The results are as follows. Firstly, the children express the past situation with ‘ø’ besides ‘-eoss-’. As their age becomes higher, the past expression with ‘ø’ begins to lessen, and instead, the expression of the past situation with ‘-eoss-’ increases. It means that the past expression is being unified into ‘-eoss-’. Secondly, it can be said that the past marker ‘-eoss-’ is recognized obscurely by the children at the age of 4, and then at the age of 5, it is fixed as an internalized grammatical marker with the recognition on the past situation by way of time adverbs. In the children after the age of 6, based on the recognition, ‘present, past, future’ are differentiated. And then, the time verbs and ‘-eoss-’ are activated. Thirdly, comparing the differences in the acquisition of the past expression between the children of the multicultural family and the children of the general Korean family, there is not a difference in the acquisition order. On the other hand, there is a difference in frequency of ‘-eoss-’, in the verb form which combined with ‘-eoss-’, in occurrence of time verbs. It means that the acquisition of the past expression of multicultural family’s children is later than that of the common Korean family’s children, due to the environmental variables of the multicultural family.
