Most studies on the interlanguage pragmatics have focused on the investigation of the learners' use and have progressed towards the explanation on the cross-cultural differences between learners' first language(L1) and target language(TL). However, the researches over the learners' awareness on the TL speech acts which enables them to use the TL strategies are as important as the researches on the cross-cultural differences of their spoken strategies and used strategies. The current study has examined whether the pragmatic awareness of Korean learners was affected by their language proficiency implementing the responses analysis of the Thai L1 speakers' responses on the appropriateness of the request speech act. In other words, this study looked into what kinds of judgment Thai L1 speakers made on the appropriateness of the Korean request speech act and whether the learners with higher TL proficiency showed the same judgmental patterns as the Korean native speakers did. The result shows that the higher grammatical competence of learners does not necessarily guarantee their pragmatic competence. This means that the pragmatic awareness of the advanced learners do not approach the same awareness level as TL native speakers have. The survey data were collected from the learners of beginning, intermediate and advanced level for the analysis. This study revels diverse developmental patterns according to the each proficiency level and purses the significance of language proficiency, which has been assumed that the pragmatic awareness of advanced learners was near to that of TL speakers.
