한국어 학습자를 위한 비언어적 커뮤니케이션 연구

A Study on Non-verbal Communication for Korean Language Learners

As shown in many studies, non-verbal language is not a substitute for verbal language, but is used together with verbal language and enriches communication. When we have a conversation, meanings can hardly be conveyed sufficiently by ‘word’ alone. Along with ‘word,’ non-verbal elements such as facial expression, gesture, posture, and distance are used to deliver true meanings to be communicated. In Korean language education as well, it is very important to study non-verbal communication. Korean language class is attended by foreigners from various language backgrounds. Within the common target language Korean, the learners naturally tend to rely on non-verbal elements. While the use of non-verbal elements may form commonness among the learners, it can also result in misunderstanding coming from difference in the meaning of non-verbal language among different cultures. Therefore, education on non-verbal language should be promoted naturally in the field of Korean language education. The best method of non-verbal language education is demonstrating it directly or showing it in images or videos. Visual media such as movies and dramas can capture non-verbal elements in the flow of a story, so learners can understand the elements easily. Thus, this study was focused on learning non-verbal elements observed in a movie. If Korean language learners can learn gestures, character sketch, posture, facial expression, stare, distance, etc. through non-verbal language education using a movie, we may enhance the utility of non-verbal communication in Korean language class.
