This study examines and analyzes the guides to pronunciation of the Korean language used in textbooks, with a special focus on Korean phonological rules. This paper raises two key points. First, Korean language textbooks reveal a dilemma between Korean standard pronunciation and colloquial pronunciation as illustrated by the phonetic representations of [t ┐]+[s'] and [h]-deletion rule. Second, this paper discusses how phonological rules apply to relevant strings to acquire fluency and accuracy of pronunciation. Korean phonological rules apply to phrases level as well as word level. This paper suggests that Korean phonological rules play an important role in acquisition of fluency.
