One of the major reasons for Hallyu (the increase in popularity of Korean entertainment and pop culture) in Japan was due to NHK’s broadcasting of ‘Gyeoulyeonga (Winter Sonata)’- Fuyunosonata in Japanese - four times since April 2003. Because of an economic down turn in the 90’s Japan lost much of its self-confidence as well as some of its economic power and took more notice of Korean politics, economy, society, culture and education etc. Hallyu contribute not only to the removal of prejudice and indifference but also to change of the Korean image from negative to positive. And it increased the number of Korean language learner in Japan. This paper analyzes the factor of Hallyu and the relation between Hallyu and the number of Korean language learner in Japan. The results clearly show that there was a movement imitate Korean culture before Hallyu has started. The broadcasting of ‘Gyeoulyeonga (Winter Sonata)’in 2003 was the start of Hallyu, and there was a large increase in the number of Korean language learner in Japan there after.
