Cultural elements are crucial in cross-cultural translation because they are the key elements which prevent source and target text readers separated by culture from communicating each other without shared prior knowledge and experience. But most of target text readers are unable to share knowledge and experience to communicate the information and connotations of the exotic cultural elements in the original text. Accordingly the translator has to be a mediator to bridge the gap in understanding cultural elements and help the target text readers to share the equivalent connotations. The aim of this paper is to examine translation problems in translating poetry texts by focusing on cultural elements which appear in the translation process. This paper has shown that the poetic phrases of Korean related to cultural elements are translated into those of English by various strategies which have active and diverse compensation mechanisms.
