The purpose of this study is to grasp the semantic category of ‘Hallyu’ and the transition of the basic meaning of the words, and to investigate the aspect of Korean's cognition changes. Based on the basic assumption that language users' cognition reflects the aspect of using language, this study focusing on the article of Korean press for ‘Hallyu’ from 2001 to 2006 analyzes the change of social interest, the semantic field in which ‘Hallyu’ has been discussed, the basic meaning of the term, and its collocational relation. The results of the study are as follows : First of all, since 2001 it is shown that the social interest about ‘Hallyu’ has a similar tendency with the changes of drama exports which is a major leading field in the ‘Hallyu’ which was at its peak in 2005. Next, as a sequel to the analysis and comparisons of the subject field covered by the article of Korean press for ‘Hallyu’ from 2001 to 2006, it has been proven that the semantic category of ‘Hallyu’ has extended into various broad categories or subordinate categories. In addition, when analyzed and compared with the original meaning of ‘Hallyu’ quoted in an article, it became clear that the attribute of basic meaning has expanded and the frequency of use has changed. Lastly, regarding the result of the meaning attribution targeting contextual collocational relation of the keyword ‘Hallyu’ found in the article, it is apparent that there appear several major changes regarding the cognition of ‘Hallyu’, although the term is obtaining stability. Based on the results of this study, the problems presently involving domestic cognition about ‘Hallyu’ is diagnosed and it suggests where this ‘Hallyu’ discussion needs to proceed.
