The purpose of this study aims at three objectives: 1) to analyze the use of polysemy in Korean, 2) to examine the learners' difficulties based on learner corpus analysis, and 3) to suggest the precise usage of polysemy. Specifically, multiple meaning words ‘보다’ are focused in this study. The meanings of ‘보다’ were listed up according to the word frequency of polysemy, and in a later chapter the frequency was compared to that of the corpus being obtained from the learners of Korean. Three research methods were used for this study. First, the word frequency of the verb ‘보다’ representing lexical polysemy was shown based on lexical frequency dictionary. Second, learner corpus was analyzed to identify the hands-on use of the lexical item being collected by advanced learners of Korean. The word meanings were ranked in the order of frequency in use. Third, by comparing two corpus-based results it was found that there was discrepancy between the two corpora. Therefore, this study pointed out a number of problems on quantitative expansion of teaching vocabulary in Korean. Finally, this empirical study will play an important role in teaching and learning Korean vocabulary by doing corpus analysis.
