외국인을 위한 한국어 교재와 문화

KFL Textbooks and Culture

Culture used in KFL textbook is important in enhancing the language-acquisition ability. Moreover, culture is important because it is intricately linked to men who use the language and to society in which the language used. Therefore, textbook should be organized with contents of culture connected to real people's feelings, attitudes and values rather than with those which transmit simple knowledge of culture or information about culture. Textbooks also need to consider the fact that culture influences learner's self-identity and expands the learner's outlook and therefore it can contribute to enhancing communication among nations leading to co-existence of nations and cultures. In this context, this study examines culture represented in several textbooks in two categories: one, culture as independent area, two, culture as the area include in people's lives. Three textbooks for general purpose is good at teaching culture by story-telling of personal experience or conversation between characters. But these textbooks have problems in showing the character's view or personalities. Textbooks targeting on immigrated women who married Korean, or overseas Koreans, are not much different in this respect. Because characters in such textbooks lack realistic personalities, they can not affect the formation of the learner's viewpoint and self-identity. Since this study examines only several textbooks, the result of the study is relatively simple and in this sense this study may be only a beginning. But the study offers some solutions to the problem mentioned here so they can be used in actual teaching. Discussion to find solutions to the problems continue and suggestions based on the examination of the text books need to be used efficiently in real teaching.
