A Study on Teaching Korean Language and Culture through Content-based Language Teaching

The matter of what to teach and how to teach it has never been out of an issue in language education field. Referring to the matter of what to teach, as many items as a syllabus can possibly encompass have been in and out of focus since the history of teaching language ever begun. Concurrently the matter of how to teach also has been developed over and over and have produced various pedagogic theories. Content-Based Language Teaching(CBLT) is one of them that insists what to teach is the content of education and how to teach it is by means of teaching the content itself. In the field of Korean language education, a few studies applied this approach particularly to the academic or occupational situation. However, the CBLT can be the very effective implement to integrate Korean language with Korean culture. Since the knowledge on Korean culture and society can help Korean learners understand Korea and be assimilated to Korea, Korean culture and society can obtain validity to be taught as educational contents along with the Korean language. In the present article, I will overlook the theories on CBLT and propose a way to select and arrange the themes for Korean language and culture education based on the theories. Specifically, I'd like to suggest a series of themes for a 4 week-based syllabus for the teachers who want to teach about Korean culture and society in their classrooms.
