On Designing the Scope of Korean Skills in a KFL Curriculum

Issues on the scope of Korean skills in KFL curricula have not been discussed much, while a lot of discussions on this issue in the field of Korean as First Language education have been made since the 1st national curriculum. Now that the number of the Korean language learners has been increasing recently, it will be necessary to study on the scope and sequence in designing a KFL curriculum for both integrated or specific purposes. Thus, the purposes of this paper is to study and discuss the areas of Korean skills that should be taught in KFL programs, and to suggest the 3 main categories of the content. The main discussion is based on the systemic-functional grammarians view that the use of language system is to construe meaning. The main purposes of teaching a foreign language, therefore, should be focused on the functional uses rather than the study of structure rules of the target language. To aim fluency and accuracy in using Korean, a curriculum should contain the knowledge not only of the linguistic elements but of the social and cultural context of the language. Therefore, this study concludes to devide the KFL knowledge content into 3 categories; ‘discourse and function’, ‘structures and expressions’, and ‘cultural elements’ of the Korean language. These main areas are, again, sub-categorized with specific linguistic and cultural knowledge elements.
