The Successful communication is determined by TL(target language) like pragmatic use rather than grammatically correct utterances. In the same way, what concerns intermediate and advanced level learners is pragmatic appropriateness rather than grammatical correctness. Pragmatic competence can be obtained and facilitated through communicating and learning in a real world discourse context. This study aims to consider whether language education in areas where TL is spoken can affect patterns of speech act realization. The results of this study are as follows. The Chinese L1 Advanced learner of Korean showed different speech act realization patterns of refusal when compared to those of Korean native speakers. In addition, Chinese L1 learners of Korean living in China showed different results in terms of their speech act realization pattern of refusal compared from those Chinese L1 learners in Korea. This indicates that exposure to the actual TL discourse context is essential for use of pragmatically natural Korean, even when the advanced learners are at the same level.
