A Study on Methods of Teaching and Learning the Korean Language for Interpretation

This is the first attempt ever made for a study of teaching Korean for interpretation. This paper tries to settle a suitable position of teaching interpretation in the framework of Korean language teaching as a foreign language. A suggestion has been made that interpretation and translation should be incorporated together in one subject as a course for Korean language interpretation and translation. The article has made a short review on theoretical principles of interpretation and types of interpretation, and some working codes of conduct for an interpretor. The author has cited classroom and out-of-the classroom teaching process and activities carried out at Sofia University, Bulgaria, in order to show a concrete example of teaching Korean for the purpose of interpretation. In conclusion the paper maintains that educators of the Korean language as a foreign language should pay attention to increase the interpreting skill of the learners, as that is a way of continuing the Korean tradition of teaching and learning foreign languages and the learners of the Korean language who have acquired the interpreting ability have higher chances of getting jobs.
