Code-switching in the Class of Korean as a Foreign Language

  • 3

This paper deals with the appearance of the code-switching carried out in a class of Korean as a foreign language from a national language institute of Paris. The purpose of this study is to describe the alternation types and operations in the verbal interaction of classroom discourse. The approach taken in this study is functionalist and procedural. To analyze the alternation types and operations, the sequential analytic model for the bilingual verbal interaction is utilized. In this case, there are two category pairs : ‘discourse-related code-switching’ providing cues for the organization of the ongoing interaction, and ‘participant-related code-switching’ about attributes of the speakers. The result of this study presents the relationship between the language alternation and the organization of the verbal interaction in the class. The teacher and the students used code-switching in order to demonstrate the various communicative purpose. The code-switching is related to divers discourse activities. The evidence is that the code-switching is a communication strategy to dynamize the verbal interaction in the class of Korean.
