Teaching Korean Derivative Words for Korean Language Learners: Focused on Korean Native Prefixes

This paper is intended to draw up a list of Korean native prefixes and derivative words for teaching Korean vocabulary to Korean language learners. Word formation and classification on simple word;compound word;complex word;derivative word;and mixed word are not necessary factors in the field of KFL(Korean as a Foreign Language). In other words;the important thing is not the grammatical category such as pre-noun;noun;adverb;root or conjugated form of verb;but functions and meanings of prefixes as making derivative words and teaching vocabulary for Korean language learners. It means we have to take other views of selecting and teaching Korean vocabulary in KFL. In this paper;Korean native prefixes and derivative words are listed based on five kinds of Korean language textbooks;the report of Korean vocabulary for foreigners and Korean native speakers graded A;B;C;or 1;2;3;4 according to Korean language proficiency. It comes to the conclusion that totally 60 Korean native prefixes (4 prefixes for beginning level;24 prefixes for intermediate level;and 32 prefixes for advanced level) are able to be presented to Korean language learners.
