The purpose of this study is to describe various aspects of texts written by KSL learners with regard to vocabulary. The written texts of 49 Japanese and 59 Chinese learners in the advanced level (level 6) of SNU have been analysed by means of lexical quantity, density, level, and frequency. These 4 indices which are highly correlated in the research show the way KSL learners use their vocabulary in order to write in Korean. The findings from this research tell us that the difference of lexical quantity results from the individual factor, not from language backgrounds, sex, education or age of learners, and that lexical quantity correlates with the writing ability of Japanese students although it is not the same case to Chinese group. The results of the analysis also show that the learners with large quantity of vocabulary write texts less densely, that learners in both group use basic or fundamental words about 70% in their texts, and that Japanese students tend to use much more highly-frequent vocabulary than Chinese. This paper concludes with a call for more research on the writing ability of KSL learners from the various perspectives in order to better understand them.
