Implications of Research on Foreign Language Text Modification for Materials Development in KFL Reading and Listening

This paper explores issues of materials development in reading and listening for teaching Korean as a foreign language (KFL). First, it examines the thorny issue of authenticity in the context of foreign language materials development in general; second, it revisits authenticity in the context of written and spoken text modification, where a concept of text elaboration as a viable alternative to text simplification, as employed in foreign language graded readers, is introduced and its advantages over text simplification, based on empirical research into foreign language comprehension and learning (of, especially, foreign language vocabulary), is discussed; and third, use of genuine, simplified, or elaborated text as pedagogic input to KFL learners is further discussed in KFL reading and listening. This paper concludes with a call for experimental research into text elaboration in KFL reading and listening.
