한국어 공손표현의 교육 방안

On the Teaching Methods of Korean Polite Expressions

This paper aims at investigating teaching methods which can help the foreign students studying Korean to improve their pragmatic competence in terms of politeness, which is shown to be achieved by laying emphasis on the importance of polite expressions in learning the Korean language and by educating students for using these expressions in appropriate situations. Therefore, I make the following suggestions to emphasize the importance of educating polite expressions. First of all, comprehending cultural aspects beneath these expressions is the primary condition to the success. Also more diverse expressions should be presented in the textbooks and classroom settings. Specifically, I suggest that students are encouraged to learn the expressions according to the speech act categories. For a systematic teaching of polite expressions, I divided the teaching stages into three steps: 1) teaching of honorific form and vocabulary, 2) teaching of various linguistic devices and semantic basis of polite expressions, 3) teaching of pragmatic differences among various polite expressions with practical tasks.
