A Study on the Memory of Korean Hangul and Chinese Hanja in Korean-Chinese Children and Adolescents

This study was carried out to compare the role of Korean script(Hangul) and Chinese script(Hanja) for word memory. In experiment 1, Hangul and Hanja words which have the same meaning were visually given for free recall. Forty one 5th-grade and forty three 11th-grade Korean-Chinese bilinguals participated in an individually administered experiment. The memory for Hanja word was higher than that of Hangul word. In experiment II, the word-family effect of Hanja was tested. Thirty Hanja words which share the same sound part or thirty Hanja words which share the same meaning part were given auditorily to fifty one 5th-grade and forty three 11th-grade Korean-Chinese bilinguals. It was found that the word-family effect in Hanja words which share the same meaning part. From the experiment I and II, the superiority of Hanja for memory was revealed. It was interpreted as the effects of the activation of word meaning and the dual coding among Hanja scripts. Educational implication from these results were discussed.
