Word Order Problems in English-Korean Translation : Adverbial Clauses of Reason

Since word order is closely related with information flow, much word order related research has been conducted in English to Korean translation. Little research, however, has been done on the translation of English adverbial clauses into Korean even though English and Korean show a striking difference: English adverbial clauses can precede or follow the main clause while Korean adverbial clauses can only precede the main clause. As a result, English sentences with sentence-final adverbial clauses are often translated into Korean sentences with sentence-initial adverbial clauses. This syntax-oriented translation causes the distortion of the original information flow, making target language texts more difficult to understand and, sometimes, even causing significant parts of the original messages to be lost. This study explores how to overcome these problems by using a text level approach, focusing on information flow of texts. That is, the Korean constructions have been identified which have the same discourse function as well as the same word order as the English sentences with sentence-final adverbial clauses of reason, and applied for translation. This approach has produced translations with better information flow. This study is confined to adverbial clauses of reason only because it is too extensive to deal with every type of adverbial clauses.
