The Grammar Description Method of Korean Language Textbooks

This study, one of the textual approaches to grammatical phenomenon of the Korean language, explores how honorific expressions are described in Korean language textbooks. Honorific expression is one of the basic grammatical categories that foreign students have to learn in that it is a typical grammatical characteristic of the Korean language. This study is undertaken in three directions. Firstly it considers the ways in which the grammar description should be done in Korean textbooks. Secondly it investigates how honorific expressions are described in the textbooks used in the institutions of Korean language education and what their characters are. Thirdly, on the basis of these investigations, this study examines the overall qualities and problems of the description methods of the honorific expressions which appear in Korean textbooks. The biggest problem of honorific expressions in Korean textbooks is the lack of system. That is, their description methods vary according to the textbooks of each institution, and the consistency lacks even within the textbooks published by an institution. Generally the descriptions of honorific expressions do not fully reflect linguistic characters of the Korean Language.
