한국수어와 미국수어의 비교문화학적 차이

Comparing Korean sign word and American sign word from inter-cultural perspective

비언어적 의사소통의 일종인 제스처 등이 나라마다 다른 이유를 비교문화적 관점에서 문화적인 차이를 반영하기 때문이라는 학자들의 주장을 살펴보고, 제스처 등에 비해 더욱 복잡한 언어체계를 갖춘 수어가 각 나라마다 다른 이유를 문화적 관점에서 고찰하였다. 특히 나라별로 문화차이를 설명하는 준거를 바탕으로 문화적 차이가 한국과 미국의 수어에 어떻게 반영되었는가를 찾아보고자 했다. 본 연구에서는 한국과 미국의 수어단어 중에 같은 뜻을 나타내지만, 다른 수어동작으로 표현되는 단어를 5가지 유형으로 설명하였다. 분석결과, 미국과 한국의 수어 동작 차이는 개인주의와 집단주의 등 동양과 서양의 문화적인 차이를 반영하는 것으로 생각된다. 수어가 언어로서 문화적인 산물인 만큼 한국과 미국의 수어가 문화적 차이를 보인다는 것은 수어가 언어라는 측면에서 당연한 결과이지만, 본 연구에서는 당연시 되는 수어의 문화적 차이를 처음으로 살펴본 연구로서 그 의의를 두고자 한다. 그러나 본 연구는 적은 수의 수어단어를 대상으로 한 점과 미국과 한국의 수어만으로 대상으로 하는 점 등 여러 가지 제한점이 있으므로 앞으로 연구과제는 여러 나라의 많은 수어를 대상으로 후속연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

Nonverbal communication includes gesture which meanings are different according to countries. A lot of study on inter-culture approach to investigate gesture differences among countries showed the differences were attributed to cultural differences of countries. Using the criteria for comparing the differences of gesture in the studies, the differences between American sign words and Korean sign words were analyzed. Results indicated that many sign words selected in this study reflected the cultural differences between the two countries. In sum, the result of this research implicated sign language had cultural characteristics of true language. However, the limitations of this study are selecting few sign words and comparing the sign words of only two countries, America and Korea.
