본 연구는 장애학생의 읽기를 위해서 타이포그래피와 관련된 국내외 연구를 고찰하고자 하였다. 타이포그래피는 문자에 의한 의사소통의 수단으로, 다양한 매체에서 문자의 배열상태나 레이아웃이나 디자인을 말하는데, 이는 장애학생들의 학습자 특성에 맞게 적절한 교재의 형식을 제공하여 장애학생들의 읽기 향상을 유도할 수 있다는 측면에서 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 타이포그래피와 관련하여 타이포그래피의 개념과 타이포그래피의 기초개념인 시각적 사고의 개념들을 종합적으로 고찰하여, 타이포그래피 연구가 특수교육분야에 주는 시사점을 도출하였다. 앞으로 타이포그래피 연구는 시각적 자극, 추상개념의 형상화, 웹페이지 구축, 유니버셜 디자인, 교과서 및 교재 구성 등과 같은 다양한 측면에서 이루어져야 할 필요성이 있다.
The main purpose of this study was to review researches about typography for improving the reading achievement of students with disabilities. Typography is the art, craft and techniques of type design, modifying type glyphs, and arranging type. Type glyphs (characters) are created and modified using a variety of illustration techniques. The arrangement of type is the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing) and letter spacing. As reviewing related studies on typography published in national/international journals, we were able to provide information on visual thinking and concept of typography. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
