프래자일 엑스 증후군의 원인과 특성

The cause and characteristics of Fragile X syndrome

1991년에 규명된 프래자일 엑스 증후군은 다운증후군 다음으로 정신지체의 출현율이 높은 유전적 장애이다. 아직까지 우리나라에서는 이 증후군에 대해 통용되는 용어가 없으며 일부 병원에서 이 증후군에 대한 진단을 시작하고 있는 단계이다. 전 세계적으로 프래자일 엑스 증후군의 출현율을 대략 1,000명에서 4,000명당 1명으로 추정하는 것으로 보아 우리나라도 이러한 증후군의아동이 바르게 진단되지 못하고 이 증후군의 특성에 적합한 접근이 이루어지지 않고 있음을 추정해 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 프래자일 엑스 증후군에 관한 여러 선행연구를 바탕으로 한 문헌연구로서 프래자일엑스 증후군의 원인과 신체적, 행동적, 언어적, 인지적 특성을 제시하여 교육 관련 전문가나 학부모들에게 좀더 아동을 잘 이해하고 효율적인 학습 결과를 가져올 수 있는 새로운 지식을 제공한다는데 의의를 둔다. 프래자일 엑스 증후군 아동이 보이는 상태나 능력, 장애의 정도, 강점과 단점의 특성은 아주 다양하고 여러 문제들이 동시에 발생한다는 특성을 알아 이에 대처해야 할 것이다.

Fragile X syndrome, since its discovery in 1991, is the second genetic cause of mental retardation, after Down’s syndrome. However, in Korea, even the terminology has not been unified, and a number of hospitals have only just begun to diagnose the syndrome. Since it is estimated that the prevalence of Fragile X syndrome is approximately one in every 4,000, one may speculate that there are more children with the syndrome than are reported, and that the syndrome is yet to be properly dealt with. This research studies many preceding literatures about Fragile X syndrome in order to summarise its causes and its physical, behavioral, linguistic and cognitive characteristics. Such endeavor finds its meaning in providing new knowledge for education experts and parents so that they may understand children better and improve the efficiency of learning. Children with Fragile X syndrome generally shows recognizable physical characteristics such as long face, protruding big ears, long fingers, flatfoot, large testicles. These characteristics are often combined with a number of behavioral characteristics like excessive shyness, avoiding eye contact, twisting hands, momentary emotional rage, exaggerated behaviour, good sense of humor and imitating behaviour. The effect of this syndrome is wide-ranging and affects the senses of taste, hearing, sight, smell and touch. One may say things irrelevant to the topic or repeat oneself. Also, Fragile X syndrome children have good long-term memory about people or events that are meaningful to them, and show fine ability to solve problems that require simultaneous information processing. However, the ability to solve sequential information processing and the memory of less meaningful or abstract subjects is insufficient. The teachers of Fragile X syndrome children should be aware that their characteristics, abilities, the extent of disability, strengths and weaknesses are very diverse and may occur at the same time.
