- 12
Addressing student needs pertaining to transition services and to ensure access to the general education curriculum has been a challenge for educators, especially those who are working in secondary special education. The purpose of this study is to explore and synthesize both the potential for, and the impact of promoting self-determination, a common practice in both transition and access to the general education curriculum, through a comprehensive review of the relevant American literature with the following topics: (a) challenges of promoting transition services and access to the general education curriculum, (b) common practices for promoting both transition and access, (c) limited use of curriculum augmentations, and (d) the potential for and the impact of promoting self-determination as a curriculum augmentation to promote access to the general education curriculum. From the synthesis, implications for future practice and studies will be addressed, which will provide insights for Korean special educators to address the issues.
