This study aims to analyze the different types of subjective preferences that foreign students of the Korean language have regarding Korean literature classes. This research employs Q methodology to understand the types and characteristics of what international students see as a good literature class. Results of the statistical analysis conducted on the ranking of 36 statements sorted by 30 research participants yielded three factors. The first factor has been labelled “Preference for a focus on grammar explanations without any importance regarding the literary genre” (nine participants), the second factor “Preference for the explanation of difficult grammar and vocabulary, tales as a preferred genre, and avoidance of a related examination” (ten participants), and the third factor “Preference for enjoying reading about one’s favorite topic without any consideration for grammar, expressions, and vocabulary” (four participants). The three factors are compared to three models emerging from previous research on literature education, namely the cultural model, the language model, and the personal growth model. The contribution of this research lies in approaching, from a perspective different from previous quantitative methods and examining the needs of foreign learners through an understanding of their preferred types regarding Korean literature classes.
