Comparing Coursebooks for English B Subject for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP)

This research analyzes two coursebooks published for English B subject for the IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Program (DP). The study evaluates how the two coursebooks meet the requirements provided in the Language B Guide. Internal and external analyses were used as part of evaluation criteria. The results show the following. Both coursebooks are well-designed to cover five prescribed themes, core requirements, and assessment criteria. However, they had differences in the composition. Coursebook 1 allowed students to explore each theme with assessment integrated in each unit, designed to enhance four English language skills. In comparison, Coursebook 2 divided nine chapters into three, each of which explores themes, text types, and assessment separately and intensively to improve four English skills. Coursebook 1 features literature more extensively yet with its level being lower than its counterpart. The comparative analysis of these coursebooks will provide practical guidelines for teachers preparing to teach English B for IBDP in Korea.
