진단 범주로서 경도정신지체에 대한 타당성 고찰

A review on the Viability of the Mild Mental Retardation as a Diagnostic Category

미국정신지체학회(1992)의 9차 정의로 인하여 이전부터 쟁점이 되어 온 경도정신지체 진단범주의 타당성에 대한 논의가 여러 분야에서 활발해졌다. 본 연구에서는 경도정신지체라는 진단범주에 대한 새로운 접근의 필요성을 토대로 정신지체 정의의 변천에 대해 알아보고 경도정신지체의 진단범주와 관련된 모호함에 대한 선행연구들을 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 모호함을 좀 더 명료화하기 위해서 특수교육의 이론적 비판을 기초로 한 경도정신지체의 진단범주의 타당성에 대한 인식전환과 실제적 측면에서 도출되는 모호함을 토대로 경도정신지체에 대한 접근을 달리할 필요가 있음을 지적하였다. 또한 인간의 잠재 능력에 대한 다양한 개념화에 기초한 새로운 진단평가 절차가 개발되어야 함을 제시하였다.

The viability of the mild mental retardation as a diagnostic categories has been actively discussed in various fields since it has been an issue thanks to the 9th definition of American Association of Mental Retardation (AAMR). This paper reviews the change of the definition for the mental retardation based on the necessity of new approach for the diagnostic category of the disability and considers the preceding researches for the ambiguity concerning the diagnostic category of the mild mental retardation. In order to clarify such ambiguity, it is pointed out that it would be necessary to make a different approach toward the definition of the mild mental retardation based on the shift of view point for the viability of the mild mental retardation and the ambiguity taken from the realistic aspects established on the theoretical criticism of the education for the retarded. Besides, it is suggested that one should develop a new procedure for diagnostic evaluation based on the diverse conceptualizations for human potential.
